The Starting Chime!

For some unknown reason, just before I installed Panther, a strange 
thing happened: no starting chime! At first I played it off as a need 
to rebuild. So I did. The chime returned. Then soon no chime. And since 
the installation of Panther, if I have to restart in either OS9 or X, I 
put my hand on the cube for the 5 seconds and it shuts down forcing me 
to place my hand back again to start it... and with no chime!

FYI I'm running 832 megs with the standard 128m video card and Panther. 
All the other sounds come through just no chime and no other problems. 
Speakers plugged directly in the cube. What could be the prognoses?
