You'll have much better luck with an external, third-party wireless device, I think. I have an airport (not extreme) sitting 15 feet away, in direct line of sight, from another box, and I get better reception and throughput from the (unknown device, but not airport) next-door neighbor, at least 2 walls and 50 feet away.
