[CUBE] Somewhat OT: Airport questions

There are a number of USB 802.11g adapters out there - the question
is, will they work with the Cube's USB 1.1 ports.
USB 1.1 is only rated for 1.5Mb/sec, which is far slower than 802.11g,
but as fast as 90% of the consumer internet connections out there. The
only real advantage there would be if you had an access point that
couldn't do mixed connections and wanted to keep all your other
wireless connections at 802.11g rates.

It's worth noting that the vast majority of broadband consumer
internet connections top out at 1.5Mb/sec anyhow, so yeah, 802.11g
would be overkill for all but the most demanding net applications.

Since the cube is stationary, connecting it to a wired network incurs
a one-time wiring hassle. With the PowerBook on the other hand, you're
not going to want to tote wires everywhere all the time so wireless is
a must. I'd suggest a mixed setup - Get an 802.11g router, which
typically comes with multiple net ports (does the Apple base station?
I dont know) and leave the Cube hard-wired to the router and let the
PowerBook enjoy wireless at 802.11g speeds. This means that
machine-machine transfers will get the full benefit of the 802.11g.
Yes, it means the wireless card on the cube is sitting idle, but once
you start throwing larger files between machines (and you'd be
suprised how quickly you accumulate large files with a broadband
connection), you'll be glad you took the speedier option, even if it
did mean a weekend of fiddling with wires.
