Start-Up Chime

Hello,
After a recent archive and reinstall went sour. I was forced to
erase and reinstall.
Everything seemed to go quite well.
One problem that I have not resolved is with the start-up chime.
I can not seem to control the volume or even shut it off.
It annoys me greatly at 3:30 am when i boot up. Most any
sound does at that time of the day!  :^)
I have looked everywhere I can think of but have had no success.
Any ideas?
