The imac G5 is not totally silent. It has 3 fans that do not make much noise, but I can hear them humming dimmly at times. Actually typing on the keyboard drowns it out for me. They are about the same as the GF3 fan in my previous Cube with a lower pitch (not a whine). It is much more quit than any G4 (Cube excepted) I have seen. If you have any noise about you won't really notice the fans. I think the issue that I face is that although the built-in speakers are good, they suck compared to the Harmon Kardon speakers with the Cube.
