Thanks everyone for your email advice. Sadly, by rebuilding account 
information, I inadvertently deleted all the email associated with that 
account. This is one way in which OS X differs significantly from OS 9 
- I could delete and then recreate account information for email then 
without deleting the associated emails.
Another warning not to rely on your tried and true OS 9 instincts when 
tinkering with OS X!
