[Cube] cube cannot see a new hard drive

I've just bought an 80GB HD for my 500MHz cube. I set the jumpers to  
be the same as on the one I am replacing and booted from a 10.4 DVD,  
but the new hard drive is not showing up as a destination for the  
installation.

I have also tried booting up in target mode so that the hard drive  
can be seen by my PowerBook – still no joy. Do I have to somehow  
format this in an external HD caddy first?

Any suggestions?
