usb card reader recommendations please

I'd like to get a usb card reader that will read all the current cards 
(with Mac OS X), even ones I haven't heard of, so that I'm ready when 
relatives drop in for the holidays with whatever digital cameras they 
may have. I count 4 card types:

pcmcia pc card
compactflash (types 1 and 2)
smartmedia
sony memorystick

but I've seen 6-in-1 readers.

Is the fifth type a microdrive?

Is a secure digital card a type of one of the cards above or is that 
the sixth type?

What card reader manufacturers or models are likely to give reliable 
service in Mac OS X and maybe work with Windows too?
