If you are interested in some of the more specialized kinds of photography (e.g., close-up, infrared), you might make a different choice than you would by just comparing basic hardware statistics. I'm very interested in close-ups and the Nikon wins on that account. I bought a Coolpix 995 several years ago and have had a lot of fun with that feature. I moved on to the Digital Rebel when it came out and started hanging out on the DP Review forums. I learned that certain digital cameras can do infrared photography with the addition of a filter. Sony was one of the cameras that did the best job there. Newer models may do a better job of filtering out that part of the spectrum now, so they may not give the same results. At any rate, it's fun to hang out on those lists and see what kinds of photos people are shooting, including after you buy the camera. Also you get tips on how to make some of those more fantastic pictures. It's also cool to see photos from all over the world.
