You can also make educated guesses about what might be culprit. In the 
end he may have to do a fresh install, and then move the various bits 
and bobs back over. I like to do that every so often as a way of 
separating the wheat from the chaff, spring cleaning if you will. A 
trick I came up with was to label everything in the SF orange and then 
you can see exactly which files are added after each install. I have 
several colors I use for organizing (Apple, Adobe, Macromedia, 
Microsoft and Other). Its an especially good way to keep track of your 
preferences folder.
