The 2300c has 8MB on board. By adding 48 MB, you reach the maximum of 56MB. 48 MB Duo memory modules are relatively rare. Sometimes you can find smaller modules on eBay, but I do not recall seeing a 48 MB module recently. They are no long in production, so there is no source for new modules. And most of those already in circulation are installed. So they become available only with a Duo or in the case of someone parting out a 2300c. In most cases, because they are in short supply, the price tends to be relatively high. Smaller modules like 20 MB are much less expensive. I hope this gives you a clearer picture.
