No one is saying that a headphone o/p to 2400c i/p won't work at all, it's
just that the level mismatches makes it very easy to distort. Also the
impedance mismatch makes for a worst S/N ratio.

Not if you are coming out of line level RCA's. Many systems these days will
have the record player going to some kind of amp/tuner/whatever and these
usually have some kind of AUX out.
