You got it: III's and IV's offer more life, and Apple doesn't recommend a Type I or II on the more recent Duo's (280c, 2300c). On those machines, even a Type III doesn't last that long, 2 hours absolute tops. Apple never officially released a Type IV, but I think third-parties added the name themselves. I think BTI at one point released a "Type IV" which actually added life by oddly protruding from the front of the machine (so the battery was physically larger than the Apple models).
