well -- thanks to the folks at this, who pointed out that the pb1400 does not like 3 RAM upgrades at a time, i was able to get mine up to 48mb using both 16mb and 24mb RAM modules purchased on ebay. it wouldn't work correctly until i removed the internal 8mb Apple RAM module.
