Peter, 

you might try a utility such as File Buddy to look at and eventually delete
invisible files from your HD. Norton creates such files for restore purposes
but also during the defragmentation procedure. After a failuure of the
"speed disk" operation, these files cannot properly be read, written and
subsequently deleted automatically. Also you may have lost some byte or
other because Norton uses RAM in the process of rearrangeing data - when you
have to shut down the machine before completion, this data is lost. (Which
is why I recommend "DiskWarrior", a tool much more simple and safe.) Anyway
I am almost certain you will find huge invisibles on your HD.
