Probably needed a firmware update. And/or updated or different backup software. Like CD burners, switching to different software can turn a totally unreliable drive into one that works perfectly. Often the manufacturer will have firmware updates that fix problems and/or add features. That's why I like LiteOn CD burners, they're always on top of things with firmware updates and they don't make you jump through hoops and beg to be allowed to have them. They put them right out easy to find on their website. My 40x12x48x burner has become much improved with three or four firmware updates since I bought it.
