In order to beat the CF "wear out" issue when using it for VM, you might want to consider a Microdrive - the CF format hard disk from IBM.

I've bought two of these in the last few months off eBay - brand new 320Mb disks with the PCMCIA adaptor go for around $35. Far cheaper than regular CF memory of that capacity. 2.2Gb disks are also available for more, though I;ve not tried one of these myself.
