Ed, Unless you already have a USB drive, consider getting a FireWire 400 card (or a USB/FireWire combo card) instead. MacOS 8.6 and 9.x only support the 12 megabit/sec USB 1.x standard, but not the more modern 480 megabit/sec USB 2.0 standard. While USB 1.x might be okay for occasional file transfers, it is quite slow for frequent use. In contrast, Firewire 400 will operate at 400 megabits per second under MacOS 8.6. Several manufacturers support MacOS 8.6 with their FireWire cards: e.g. Keyspan (Part # FPCI-3N), Belkin (Part # F5U501-MAC), etc. You can figure on spending between US$25 and US$45 from typical on-line sources.
