With my ethernet card, I have to insert it just after (as in 
immediately after) the first "Mac OS 9.1" splash screen appears.  Not 
the one with the status bar, the one directly after the happy Mac.  The 
thinking is, you have to put the card in before the drivers load (USB 
drivers tend to load later in the start up process) but after the 
initial ROM is loading.
