The cells are 5/4ths A cells, if I recall correctly.  I've rebuilt a few, it 
works fine.  Cells can be bought from several sources, such as 
www.batteriesamerica.com and others.  I used Sanyo cells, a 280 would run for several hours 
on a new batt.
