A clean install does not erase any information on the hard drive, All it does is not reuse any info from the operating system already installed I.E. preferences, application etc. You can use the Apple disk utility(that is current name back in OS 8, 9 it was called something else) to erase and reformat the drives. Use the multiple pass option. If you are really worried about any info on the drives the safest thing to do is remove and destroy them.
