New to list: G4 Quicksilver can't see Firewire devices

I'm new to the list and I'm sure that this question has probably been 
asked over and over.  Does anyone know for sure why the built-in 
firewire ports on G4's just stop working?  Is it a hardware or software 
issue?

I've kept up with the OS updates for 10.2 (I have not loaded Panther on 
the machine yet)
I've reset the PRAM
I've reset Power Management
I've reset the Firmware

I have a G4 Quicksilver (Dual 1GHz)
