When you have an image you want to save (in Safari), just drag it off the browser window and it's downloaded to the desktop. Some images are presented as HTML anchors. It is polite to load a low resolution GIF or PNG for display on the page but to offer a higher resolution JPEG or TIFF which is downloaded if you ask for it.
