no sound our

I have a problem with getting sound from my g4 under os X.

when I use OS 9 the computer has no problem seeing the internal 
speaker or other devices attached for sound out.  When in OS X it 
won't recognize the built in speaker ot the head phone that I use for 
viavoice.

It appears to be a software conflict but I have not been able to 
identify what the conflict is.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have a Dual 1Ghz G4, running OS X.2.5, 1GB RAM, I have many 
application installed but few nonstandard utilities.
