Somehow, he has reset the monitor preferences to the new settings. This function, the inverted image colors/black & white negative-like appearance, is one of the settings available to users who have visual defects or handicaps or just want a different visual effect on screen. He caused the change by doing something to the OS preference settings while he was the logged in user. It wasn't simply tapping one of the F-keys that did it. Maybe he needs a little more training in OS-X and its capabilities/hazards? When he is the "logged in" user, OS-X sets the preferences to his personalized settings. When he logs out or another user logs in, the settings revert to the normal set of preferences or the newly logged in user's preferences and the condition disappears. You will have to have him log in as the active user and then go to the monitor controls to reset his preferences back to normal and save the change as his current preference.
