Alphabetical listing exceptions

How can I force named items to drop to the bottom of an alphabetical 
window listing in OSX?

I used to be able to exempt the order of certain items in an 
alphabetized list by placing a bullet or "tilde" before their names. 
This addition would send them to the bottom of the list but now in 
OSX they go to the top of the list. I can add "Z" to the front of the 
name but would rather not.

Suggestions?
