Playing DVD's on a MAC

I would like to know if anyone has any insight on a post on MacFixit. See
link below. It's a post about playing DVD's in not just a Mac but from what
this guy sounds like playing any DVD in any computer. See the second post of
the topic from a member called "tacit". Just looking for some opinions,
