He may be able to use the software "drivers" from Epson to directly scan, but more likely the drivers from Epson will enable other graphics programs to access the scanner. What model of scanner is this [sorry I got in on this late]? If he does use Photoshop as long as the Epson driver supports TWAIN he will be fine, if he doesn't use Photoshop he could use Graphic Converter [shareware], or perhaps, depending on the model of scanner he could just use Image Capture and import through it. I would also see what info you can get on iPhoto 2.0 because if I recall it will support scanning.
