A "driver" ideally should be completely invisible, except that the device it operates becomes available to your system; with the possible exception of a configuration screen that can be activated by application programs. If that's not there, there's usually a configuration utility supplied by the manufacturer that talks to the driver (or both). Any device manufacturer who DOESN'T also give you some application to actually USE the hardware you just bought, no matter how rudimentary, is nuts, unless the OS comes with one already (like iPhoto for a camera).
