Several thoughts come to mind:

1. Are the books put to sleep while they are being recharged?
2. Why aren't they plugged into the charger/converter all day long?
3. Are they completely shut down at any time during the day?
4. What is the 1/2 life time period of the TCP/IP address given by your 
server?

Any of the above listed conditions could cause a loss of connection. There 
are some other reasons for losing connection, but not that I think would 
exist in a classroom setting (except for student mis-handling of equipment).
