mike breeden has one of the biggest compiled databases of drive 
compatibility with apple hardware. search it, i love it.

as far as 99% of those reports go (and my personal experience as well) 
you can get a pioneer dvd-r drive and install it internally and it will 
be recognized as compatible with all the "i" apps. its when you try to 
use it externally as a firewire drive that it doesnt work. so your best 
bet might be to get a pioneer drive, install it internally and get a 
firewire case for your existing drive.
