Best way to partition an external drive.

Just purchased a Cobra 120gb FireWire HardDrive.  My Mac has a 80gb hard
drive.  Here's what I would like to do:  Partition the Cobra 40gb/80gb,
using the 80gb as a back up drive and the 40gb as an additional drive and
possibly, as I have read, a bootable one.

How would you do it?
