It's called marketing. Of course you are going to try to portray your machine in the best light. Nvidia and ATI (graphics), Microsoft, Oracle, Sybase, and IBM (datbases) and many others have engaged in specsmanship with benchmarks for marketing purposes. In Apple's case they did use roughly equivalent compilers. Was the compiler used for the Windows test the most optimized? No, but neither was it heavily optimized for the Mac. The gcc compiler is a widely used and accepted compiler and has had much more work done on the x86 version than the PPC version. An Apple employee (can't remember his name offhand) answered some of the issues on Slashdot today. It's not a lie, because the the results can be reproduced. It doesn't make all the optimizations on either platform that are possible, so some people are up in arms. There is never really a high road with benchmarks, because someone will always question your methodology and computers and software are so complex, especially cross-platform. There is a low road in which things are manipulated for the purposes of a benchmark (see Nvidia graphics recently). Caveat emptor no matter who is quoting benchmarks.
