My experiences have been similar to Dick's. I always erase and run DU on the target disk and it works perfectly every time; i.e., probably 50+ times now. Once, however, something caused CCC to become corrupted and it wouldn't complete a cloning operation. I had to download and reinstall it, but no problems since.
