My System:

G4/400 (Yikes!)
64mb RAM
Internal 40 gb HD
Internal Zip 250
Internal 16x CD-ROM
19" Sony Monitor
Mac OS 9 pre-installed (no other software provided)
Original Keyboard and Mouse
Total Price (including tax): $431 USD

Added:
768 mb RAM: $120
80 gb HD: $40
ATI Radeon 7000 64 mb Video Card: $100
Apple internal DVD-ROM: $20
Pioneer DVR-107: $114

My Conclusion:
Seems a little high, though the Mobo is a critical factor that you don't mention. Is it a Yikes, Sawtooth, etc? Also note that most of my equipment was added after finding the best deals possible, including waiting for months before buying. Strangely, I spent exactly the same amount on my system as you are thinking of spending.

YMMV,
