There are no dumb questions.  Everyone was new at one point, so if you 
run into snobs, they're just jerks who don't choose to remember when 
they knew nothing about X.

Should be a green "stack of note paper" icon in iTunes, over on the 
left side, under the "Source" heading in this order:
Library (gold stack of note paper)
Radio (little speaker icon pointed up)
Music Store

If you don't see all that, then there's something wrong with iTunes, or 
the way you have your iTunes window set up.

When you click on "Music Store," the status bar at the top should 
indicate that it is connecting to the iTunes Music Store.  You will 
need to set up an account first, but once you have given them the keys 
to your credit card, you can either click-n-browse, or search for 
specific artists/songs/albums in the Search box.
