It depends on the recording quality, but generally speaking VCR will have less quality all around from the start that also diminishes over time as the tape and the VCR's moving contact components wear out. The videos that are encoded on these TV recorders are usually at the worst / least in MPEG 1 quality that is in equal quality to VHS, however, it will not diminish over time like VHS tapes.
