But, in general terms, the OS communicates with hardware components by means of small programmes (drivers). A new machine may (probably will) include new or modified hardware components, which require new or modified drivers. The copy of the OS supplied with the machine should include all drivers required to get the machine working properly. Older versions won't have them.
