John, I would have agreed with you last year until I found out it was Apple that was at fault. I have Epson, Microteck, UMAX, HP and Canon scanners to support and non of them had OSX covered. Apple did not have Twain and other things ready in OSX. If you think Epson's software is crap try the others. Epson just released OSX software for a lot of their scanners and printers; It is very good software with plenty of features. Apple has hung us out to dry on printing and scanning in OSX. This is why most graphic shops have not switched to X, Quark worked in Classic but Printing and scanning were screwed. It is only now that Apple is providing the means for developers to write some of this software. OSX still does not have native support for paper sizes (as I understand it). People not getting good scanner support for their scanners in OSX, can Buy VueScan (http://www.hamrick.com/). It cost $60. It is much much cheaper than Silverfast and I only have one complaint. If you are scanning Very large very high resolution files it is slow.
