You did not indicate what version of the OS you are using. The procedure for making a copy of your data will change according to the OS you are using.

If you are using OS 9 or earlier, you can simply format the new drive and then drag and drop the data from the old drive to the new one.

If you are using OS-X, you have to use a copy program like CarbonCopyCloner to copy the invisible files from the old drive to the new one.
