Yes, you must use DVD-R on the 104 and probably on later models as well.

I have a Yamaha firewire 16/10/40 and the Pioneer 104 DVD/RW.  Strangely I 
can copy a CD only by placing the original in the Yamaha and copying with 
the 104.  Can't do it the opposite direction.

I found you have to be very careful that proper selections are made in 
Titanium Toast 5.1.2.  They don't necessarily remain where you had the 
settings the last recording.
