You will have to get a SCSI card. If you are running OSX the UMAX should be replaced. You can buy software to work with the UMAX but it cost as much as a new and better scanner. I have been through this. A refurbished $50 Epson is much better than the UMAX. The UMAX may work in Classic, but you won't want to. It appears you have a SCSI 2 card? If so, check with maker on OSX compatibility. Those drives aren't much anymore; you will have ATA in the G4. I would really rather spend money on a bigger ATA than on a SCSI card. SCSI is pretty much done for in desktops and workstations. MS Works is a dog and you will be lucky that it doesn't work in OSX. MS Office 98 will not work in X; maybe in Classic mode. You can get great 19 and 20 inch monitors that are refurbished one years old for $200 and less. I bought a ViewSonic Pro P95f+ for $200 from the company with warrantee. I bought a 21 inch Mishubitsi used for $125 from a local PC dealer. I think this would be better than spending on adapters. You will need to check with HP on the printer. If they don't support X with it CUPS probably does (Common Unix Printing S?). Roger Mozilla is better on X, and you can move from Outlook to the new Thunderbird by Mozilla. If you buy OfficeX Outlook is with it. jim page wrote: > hello G4 list members. i'm new to this mac list but on several others > > i'm looking to migrate to a G4(or two) within the next 6 months or so and > had a few migration Qs > > my current primary MAC: (also have a backup 8100 similarly configured) > - 8100, w 300Mhz G3, 264M, 21" supermac monitor(fixed freq), dual 17G > SCSI-2, MACOS 8.6, UMAX 2200 scanner(SCSI/USB), HP 870Cxi AppleTalk printer > - s/w used, Microsoft works 4.0, Office 98, mozilla, outlook express > > initial migration Qs: > > - will i be able to use the the 21 " super macs(fixed freq) monitors on a G4 > ?? i've heard some adapters (griffin) may be available. are they any good > or is it time for a new monitor > > - will MS WORKS run in native mode of X.3 ?? or is a migration to appleworks > suggested > > - any other migration pitfalls seen with above environment > > much thx, > > jim
