Apple does make mistakes, maybe because of high pressure and stress of the 
job.  It isn't the same as it was when it was a garage band.  However, I 
have found that if you keep upgrading they finally get around to fixing your 
particular bug.  Panther 10.3.4 mail seems to be okay.
