How to lock (save) OSX Sound Settings - CRS

I am having problems with OSX 10.2.3 on a G4-450 AGP that CRS (con't
rembemer sound) settings.

I try to keep my input at  10% and my output at 70% to work with a SignaLink
SL-1+ sound card interface and my System Preference Sound panel 'input'
setting keeps sliding up to the high end.  I  pull it back but there is no
"Save" box in the Sound panel.

Anyone know how to cure this OSX CRS issue?
