"Upgrade" from OSX to 9.2

Can I go ahead and install get the upgrade installer for OS 9.1 or higher on my OSX G4?

Or do I need to wipe OSX away first, as a friend reccommended? 

If so, how do I do that?

If it's not necessary to get rid of OSX first (as I hope), I will just install the upgrade as noted above and I'll be in business!
