Thanks to those who offered advice. I finally figured out the problem. My PC notebook does have a firewire port but it was not meant for use except for attaching to a video camera--it has 4 pin not 6 pin. To get a fully working firewire port I must add a firewire card that allows a 6 pin connection. This costs about $40 apparently.
