Occasionally (about every two months) I copy my entire drive to a larger external drive, allowing it to overwrite everything. I don't use that drive for anything else. That keeps everything updated and current. Anything you feel you absolutely must keep in its original form you can just put on a CD. Also I have found it to be very important to know what you can do without so you can dump it. I hope I'm not being too simplistic.
