[G4] Hard drive upgrade question

I know this has probably been covered extensively, but I have to 
confirm before I buy.  I would like to add a 200 Gb hard drive to my 
Gigabit G4/400.  I am shopping under the assumption that my system will 
not see anything over 120 Gb without a controller card installed.  But, 
I am wondering if that applies to external drives as well.  If I bought 
a > 120 Gb external drive, would I have to get a firewire or USB card 
that will allow the system to see the entire drive?  I don't need to be 
able to boot from the drive, it is just for storage.
