If these SW solutions strongly suggest backing up everything before repartitioning, then why bother? It takes just as much time and effort to backup, erase, repartition, and restore, either w/their SW or Apple's DU and whatever you're using to backup. The latter w/o coughing up anything for a 3rd-party solution.
