You don't mention which version OS you are running.

I found that upgrading to OS9.2.x eliminated all the hang-ups and  
freezing that OS 8.x let happen after installing PCI USB cards. It  
didn't seem to matter which brand card was installed, the OS upgrade  
was what worked for me.
